The Vanitha Samajam, also known as the Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam, is the esteemed women’s wing of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. Founded in 1928, the fellowship is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Martha Mariam) and is committed to nurturing the spiritual, social, and charitable development of women across the Church.

The St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in London boasts an active Vanitha Samajam that plays a crucial role in church services, outreach programs, and cultural celebrations.

Organisation and Mission

Functioning as an integral part of the Church’s official structure, the Vanitha Samajam is active at all levels—from parishes to dioceses. Each diocese elects its own executive committee annually under the spiritual guidance of the clergy. The Samajam’s mission is “to enhance and enlighten the spiritual and social growth of the women” of the Church.

In practice, the organization hosts regular prayer meetings, Bible studies, and devotional gatherings, fostering spiritual fellowship and sisterhood. For instance, some cathedrals report weekly prayer sessions, Bible readings, and hymn-singing. A special fasting and prayer service, often featuring guest speakers, is also held every Saturday, reinforcing the spiritual fabric of the community.
